CONNECT Camp with students from YES! Prep Gulfton

Updated: Aug 15, 2018

A week long design camp with laser cutters 3D printers and much more!

As part of our continued mission to provide makerspace opportunities to the local community, we recently wrapped a very successful CONNECT Camp with students from YES! Prep Gulfton.

15 kids worked for 5 days through a human centered creative curriculum which focused on using inspirations from their life and community as creative fuel for their crafts. The result was them having the opportunity to design intentional and useful products representative of their lives.

The concept behind this approach to education is aimed towards providing empathetic design experiences for the community.

"50% of the time was ‘choice time’ where they got to choose all of the tools which gave them whatever they wanted to make,” said Manoj, Youth Programs Instructor. “It was the most fun time because they were invested in what they were making the entire time.”

The students began the week designing a personal logo based on interests and inspirations from their communities. This was used as a mapped design for their personalities and interests, which ultimately served as the source material for their various design challenges.

“One student really liked basketball so he made a basketball hoop out of cardboard,” said Manoj.

“The kids who attend don’t normally have the chance to experience this during the school year,” said Lauren, Development Director. “For them to have this hands on experience is something new and exciting.”

This is just one example of the youth centric programs we at TXRX Labs offer to local communities as a means to provide access to new equipment and hands-on experiences. Subscribe to our newsletter or reach out to ---- to find out more about our youth outreach and upcoming events.
